This week in preparation for Remembrance, I am leading assemblies all week at Dunbar Grammar School, as well as one at Innerwick and Cockburnspath Primary Schools. We are thinking about the contrast between the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, and the new names added to the War Memorial in Dunbar. These individuals all made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives for their friends and their country. The poignant difference being some were identified and others were not. In today's culture, a different battle is occurring around climate change, and one of the leaders of this is Greta Thunberg, who was nominated for an Environmental Award, but refused to accept it as she wants the discussion to remain around the science and not her or anyone else being singled out for an award. I then challenge the young people with the idea of doing something good or kind or important when no one is looking, in an effort to remind them "it's not all about me" but about making the world a better place.
